Tennessee Prison Release Scope

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates a statewide prison and felony-supervision system. Research found no TDOC prison physically located in Polk County. A Polk County detainee may be sentenced to TDOC while held at the local jail as a backup inmate awaiting transfer. When TDOC accepts that person, disappearance from the Polk booking is a custody transfer, not community release.

Later, a state prisoner may leave confinement on parole, determinate release, sentence expiration, or another lawful route. Parole is conditional release to community supervision before sentence end. Probation is a court-ordered community sentence and may follow split confinement. Discharge means the relevant sentence or supervision relationship has ended. These labels are not synonyms. The state record and its dates must be read together.

Search TDOC Polk Releases

TDOC's Felony Offender Information Lookup, known as FOIL, covers people currently or formerly in TDOC custody or supervision. Search with a TOMIS number when available because it is more precise than a common name. A name search should be checked against middle name, age or birth information, photograph, offense, and assigned location before the record is treated as a match.

1. Open the official FOIL gateway and launch the search.
2. Enter the TOMIS number, or use the person's first and last name.
3. Match identifiers before opening or relying on a detail result.
4. Read Current Status, Supervision Status, Assigned Location, offenses, sentence fields, and release information together.
5. Save the exact labels and access date, then request the underlying record if a date is disputed.

The official FOIL gateway shows why this search applies to former offenders as well as current prisoners.

The search also appears in the official MyTN application under Public Safety. It is not a Polk County jail roster and may not cover a person whose only custody was a short local misdemeanor stay.

Read Tennessee Release Dates

A FOIL date must retain its exact label. Release Eligibility Date is the first date on which a person may be considered under the governing release rules. It is not a promise that the person left prison that day. Sentence End Date is the calculated end of the sentence. A person on parole can have a future sentence end date while living in the community under supervision. An actual release or discharge entry is historical evidence of an event.

Projected dates can change. TDOC calculates time based on the judgment, offense and conduct date, sentence range, jail credit, consecutive or concurrent terms, credit awards or losses, disciplinary events, new judgments, detainers, and parole action. Tennessee does not have one universal rule requiring everyone to serve 85 percent. Section 40-35-501 contains several percentages and offense-specific regimes, while section 41-21-236 governs eligible sentence-reduction credits. Individual computation belongs to TDOC.

The official TDOC Sentence Information route separates state-prison questions from qualifying county-jail felony inquiries. Provide the TOMIS number and judgment details when asking about a calculation.

Request TDOC Discharge Records

FOIL is a locator and public summary. It is not the whole institutional file. For older or more exact proof, request the existing record through TDOC Records Management. Name the item sought: actual release or discharge date, release type and authority, custody movements, receiving agency for a detainer transfer, discharge letter, sentence computation, or offender photograph. A narrow date range helps staff identify the record.

TDOC's official archived-record channel accepts requests through its GovQA portal or by mail to TDOC Records Management, Rachel Jackson Building, 2nd Floor, 320 Sixth Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37243-0465. Questions may be directed to 615-253-8079. Archive-search charges may apply, and TDOC says it will notify the requester. Do not prepay or send sensitive identifiers through an unsecured general message.

The archived record instructions identify full name, TOMIS number, date of birth, and other identifying data used for a search. Supply only what is needed through the official channel. A CR-1941 Letter of Discharge is one specific TDOC record that can establish discharge. TDOC policy also distinguishes release to a detainer from a return to the community.

Polk Transfer Versus Discharge

The last known custodian determines the first search. If PCSO says a person was released to TDOC, use the Polk event record to capture the transfer date and receiving agency, then use FOIL to track state custody. An incarcerated FOIL result confirms that confinement continued. If the record later changes to parole, physical prison confinement ended but supervision remains. Inactive status requires the dates and sentence detail before anyone calls it a discharge.

County and state records serve separate roles. The Polk County jail event gives the local movement and timestamp. The court judgment explains the sentence and jail credit. FOIL shows the state status, assigned location, offenses, and available release information. TDOC Sentence Information and archived records support the official calculation or final discharge. VINE may send a custody-change notice, but the notice is a prompt to verify with the reporting custodian.

The Polk County release record overview is the proper route when the person never entered TDOC custody. FOIL should not be used as a substitute for a local jail event.

Verify Tennessee Actual Release

A parole decision and an actual prison exit are separate events. The Tennessee Board of Parole may grant release, but the plan must be approved and required conditions must be met before institutional staff carry out the movement. Check the final Board action when it applies, then compare FOIL status and the TDOC event record. A scheduled hearing, favorable vote, or future eligibility date should never be restated as an accomplished release.

Community supervision also continues the sentence in a different setting. FOIL may show parole or probation with an assigned location. District 30 can route a Polk County question to the correct field office, but protected case notes may not be public. Discharge requires stronger proof, such as a past sentence end with inactive status and, when precision matters, the official discharge letter or archived record.

Detainers require one more step. TDOC may release a person to another authority rather than to the community. Ask for the receiving agency and movement date, then use the proper federal, immigration, county, or state channel. The words “not incarcerated” do not by themselves mean the sentence ended or that no other custodian took control.

Polk State Release Evidence

A durable Tennessee release record should identify the person, TOMIS number, institution or local holding site, actual movement date, release type, and supervision status. The judgment supplies the sentence and credit foundation. FOIL supplies the public status snapshot. The discharge letter or archived record can resolve the final end of the state relationship. Keep each document's date and purpose in the timeline.

When the county and state dates differ, compare the local TDOC-transfer event with the later prison release. They often describe separate custody boundaries. The Polk County date marks departure from the jail. The TDOC date can mark later departure from state confinement. Clear labels prevent a transfer from being reported as a release months or years too early.

TDOC Release Record Contacts

There is no single local Tennessee prison contact in Polk County because no state prison was documented there. FOIL and TDOC Records Management serve the statewide system. The office is not the source for every protected supervision note or the original jail timestamp.

The Tennessee Board of Parole makes parole decisions, while TDOC supervises people in the field. A Board grant may come before physical release because a release plan and other conditions still must be completed. FOIL's actual status and the institutional event should be checked after the decision.

For identity, use the TOMIS number, full name, birth details, and case information appropriate to the channel. Do not merge a same-name FOIL record with a Polk County case without a reliable identifier. Dynamic systems can change, so record the access date and the exact words shown.
